3-D: It wasn't all it was cracked up to be...

Photobucket After work today Todd and I met at the Ultra Star Theaters in Del Mar to watch the BCS National Championship game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Florida Gators, in 3D. This was the first of its kind, and the tickets sold out well in advance. We didn't really care about which team won, but we thought it would be so cool to see a football game on a big screen in 3D. Todd got there ahead of me and got burritos at El Pollo Loco and snuck them into the theater in his jacket pockets. On the way in we were handed 3-D glasses in exchange for our tickets. We had to sit on the side cuz somehow there was VIP seating roped off in the middle section. Um... how much did they have to pay? Todd went and got his prepaid popcorn and Pepsi and we settled into our seats. They showed some of the pregame and the announcers kept saying how great it was that this was shown in 3D in theaters. But we were alarmed because the screen was not that bright, the images not that clear, and the audio not that good. We thought maybe they were working out the kinks before the game. Well, the game started and it didn't get any better. The camera angles were confusing and erratic in order to show the 3D-ness of it all. Some plays, the screen was downright blurry. We expected a lot more out of this because we had seen a U2 concert in IMAX 3D before and it was truly amazing. But this was a regular theater screen and not IMAX, and it was live TV after all. We felt dizzy from the blurriness and the 3D glasses were actually hurting the tops of my ears, so we left after only one quarter of play. I think this application of 3D has a lot of potential, but this first time out it was not executed right. Oh well, it was an experience that we tried out and not every new experience will work out to our liking. But it was an experience! Oh and to top it off, the El Pollo Loco burritos were tasteless. I guess it wasn't our night, ha ha.
