Jason Mraz for a Dollar

Tonight we went to the last show in Jason Mraz's "Gratitude Cafe" tour, down at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, for $1. Well, there were four of us, so $4.

About a month ago, Jason announced on his website that he was going to do a free show in San Diego, to thank his long-time fans. He's lived here for the last ten years and played all over San Diego coffee shops and venues before he signed the big record contract. In fact, Todd has seen him in a little coffee shop from "back in the day".  So, a couple of weeks ago, when the tickets went on sale at Ticketmaster on a Saturday morning at 10am, we jumped on and got four $1 reserved-seat tickets.  The lawn seating was free.  It really was $1.  No Ticketmaster fees!  The tickets sold out in under 10 minutes, so we were fortunate to get them.  I guess Mr Mraz's people worked out the details with Ticketmaster.  There were no paper tickets.  You just bring the credit card that you purchased the tickets with, and they scan it at the entrance and print out your seats.  That way it prevents people from scalping the tickets and making a big profit from Mr. Mraz's kindness.  I thought it was a totally cool idea.  And even the parking was free if you carpooled with three or more people.

We went with Tyler, our neighbor across the street, and Sally.  Went down to El Zarape first and got a couple of burritos for dinner.  Then picked up Sally on the way to the concert.  It was orderly and fairly fast and painless to get into the parking lot, which is NOT the usual for this venue.

It was really fun and a great idea, very generous of Jason Mraz. I think a donation to one of the three charities close to his heart is in order. :)  Thanks for a great time, Mr. Mraz!

  3. I kept reading about this concert and thought it was a very nice gesture - and genuine. I saw him twice - once before he became too famous and again after he was, at another band's concert at SDSU. That he's originally from Virginia makes him even cooler in my book. You guys look like you had a great time.

  4. So fun with a concert, and even better with that price! =) I've only heard about Jason Mraz the last year, but I like a lot of what he has done.
